My Story

Artist Bio

Scott Hartney, is an artist who found his creative calling in Galway, Ireland, although his roots trace back to the United States. It was in his mid-fifties that he decided to embark on this artistic journey, reigniting a passion for drawing that had ignited during his childhood.

Though life led him away from art for a time, in 2017 he and his wife settled in Ireland. The ensuing lock-downs provided the perfect opportunity for artistic revival, and he reached for his pencil once again. Starting with familiar ground in cartoons, his love for history guided him towards the captivating 12th-century ruins scattered throughout his small town.

Scott's art was his sanctuary, not seeking the spotlight but instead finding solace and self-expression within his creations. Initially, a career as an artist seemed improbable. While sketching outdoors, someone expressed interest in purchasing one of his pieces, prompting him to consider sharing his art with the world. Over time, his work and confidence grew, and he gradually embraced the idea of becoming a professional artist.

Now, with more than a dozen completed works and four pieces published in a local artists' collective book, Scott finds himself eager to explore new opportunities. His artistic pursuits know no bounds, as he aspires to venture into the realms of portraits and caricatures, experimenting with the expressive possibilities of charcoal and watercolor.

Thank you for joining Scott on this inspiring journey, where art and passion know no bounds.

Artist Statement

Using pen and ink and the subtleties of graphite, my art is defined by a meticulous attention to detail. The ancient ruins scattered across the Irish countryside ignite my creativity, presenting captivating subjects that once thrived with intricate beauty. I love visiting these sites and capturing their essence in the moment. The masterpieces of W.H. Bartlett have greatly influenced my pursuit of artistic excellence.

As an observer, I seek out hidden treasures within a scene, inviting viewers to discover often-overlooked details in my work. The journey from sight to pen grants me artistic freedom and forges a deep connection to each piece I create.

Through my art, I aim to inspire reflection and appreciation for the history embedded in each location. My work serves as a window to the past, encouraging viewers to immerse themselves in the intricate tapestry of time and place.

My dedication to this craft has yielded rewarding results, with four of my pieces featured in a local artists' collective book, showcasing the breathtaking landscapes of County Kerry, Ireland. I am now receiving more commission requests for locations I've yet to visit, and I am humbled that people appreciate my interpretations of their cherished ancestral homes or favorite getaways.

In essence, my art bridges the past and present, connecting viewers with the intricate details that make every place extraordinary. As my artistic journey continues, I believe that capturing the essence of a location preserves its history and shares the remarkable beauty that surrounds us, standing the test of time.
