Drawn from the Past – The Portfolio | Scott Hartney Art

Ireland’s landscape is filled with stories carved into stone — castles that defended ancient towns, abbeys that once echoed with prayer, and ruins that have stood quietly for centuries.

This portfolio brings together my full body of work capturing these historic places through detailed pen-and-ink and graphite drawings. Each piece begins with time spent at the site itself, studying the structure, the light, and the character that centuries have left behind.

From medieval castles and monastic abbeys to ancient ruins and historic landmarks, these drawings are my way of preserving Ireland’s architectural heritage on paper.

Many of the locations featured here are places I have visited repeatedly across Galway, Clare, Mayo, and beyond — sketching on location whenever possible before completing the finished drawing in the studio.

Each artwork is created by hand using traditional techniques, focusing on texture, structure, and the timeless presence of these remarkable places.

The collection continues to grow as I travel and discover new sites across Ireland.

Castles Captured: A Journey Through Line and Texture

Castles have always fascinated me. Their stone walls carry centuries of history, from medieval strongholds to coastal defenses that still dominate the landscape today.

In this collection I capture some of Ireland and Scotland’s most remarkable castles through detailed ink and graphite drawings, focusing on the architecture, texture, and atmosphere of each site.

Featured locations include Athenry Castle, Dunguaire Castle, Ross Castle, Clifden Castle, Blackrock Castle Observatory, Clonony Castle, and Scotland’s iconic Eilean Donan Castle.

Each piece is drawn by hand and available as original artwork, limited edition prints, and standard prints, preserving the character and history of these historic landmarks.

Drawn to the Divine: Abbey Artworks in Ink and Graphite

Ireland’s medieval abbeys are among the most atmospheric historic sites in the country. Through detailed ink and graphite drawings, I aim to capture the architecture, history, and quiet presence of these remarkable monastic ruins.

This collection features artwork inspired by sites such as Clontuskert Abbey, Fore Abbey, Corcomroe Abbey, Kilconnell Friary, and Clonmacnoise. Each drawing is created by hand, focusing on the textures of ancient stone, Gothic arches, and the timeless character of these sacred places.

If you love Irish history, monastic architecture, or historic ruins, these drawings offer a way to connect with Ireland’s past through art.
