Abbey's Ghost

Clontuskert Abbey - Ballinasloe, County Galway

Original Ink and Graphite Drawing by Scott Hartney

This original artwork captures the haunting elegance of Clontuskert Abbey, a hidden gem of medieval Ireland. Created with fine ink and graphite detailing, and finished with delicate gold leaf accents, the drawing highlights the abbey’s intricate stonework and spiritual legacy.

Clontuskert Abbey stands quietly in County Galway's landscape, a 13th-century Franciscan monastery whose weathered ruins speak of centuries of prayer and solitude. The site's remote beauty—its crumbling walls framed by Irish countryside—drew me to capture its contemplative spirit. This drawing honours the abbey's resilience and the stories held within its stone, preserving a moment of stillness at a place where history lingers.

Like all heritage sites, Clontuskert Abbey embodies the endurance of human faith and craft across centuries. Its stones carry the imprint of generations—monks who walked its cloisters, families who sought refuge, time itself etched into every surface. This drawing honours that layered memory, capturing not just what remains, but the invisible presence of those who came before, reminding us that we too leave traces.
