Castle Ellen appears to have been named for an Ellen Browne, who lived at the site before the Lambert family. Athenry Parish Heritage records the Irish name as Caisleán Eibhlín, meaning “Ellen’s Castle,” and specifically says it was called after Ellen Browne.

There is an important distinction here: the present Castle Ellen House was built for the Lambert family around 1810, but there was an older castle on the estate, whose ruins survive nearby. The Castle Ellen name therefore predates the present Georgian house.
