Fore Abbey - County Westmeath
Original Ink & Graphite Drawing by Scott Hartney
This original ink and graphite drawing depicts Fore Abbey, a remarkable monastic site founded in the 7th century and set within a secluded Westmeath valley. The abbey’s arches and surviving stonework speak to centuries of spiritual life and craftsmanship.
Why Seven Wonders?
Because Fore is traditionally associated with the “Seven Wonders of Fore”, a group of unusual features and legends surrounding the monastery and village. That makes Seven Wonders particularly specific to Fore Abbey.
Traditionally, the seven are described along these lines:
- The monastery built upon the bog without apparently sinking.
- The mill without a race, associated with St Fechin causing water to flow where none had been.
- The water that flows uphill, referring to the unusual course of a local stream.
- The tree that will not burn, traditionally connected with St Fechin.
- The water that will not boil, from St Fechin's holy well.
- The anchorite in a stone, associated with the hermit's cell.
- The lintel stone raised by St Fechin's prayers, traditionally said to have been placed without human assistance.
The exact wording and enumeration varies between historical and local accounts, but the Seven Wonders tradition is firmly associated with Fore.
